Healthcare workers are life-long learners.
During our three operative weeks we host educational lectures for our visiting group and local hospital house staff. Last year these topics included common general surgery care (e.g. nasogastric tube placement and care). This coming year by request we will host more sessions on basics of laparoscopic surgery and dedicate some teaching time to trauma response, as well as host an oral and maxillofacial conference for local dentists and surgeons. One of our projects this year will be to begin to develop a curriculum for basics of laparoscopic techniques for our Haitian resident physician colleagues. Starting in January, students from the MS2 to MS4 level have monthly afternoons that are peer-led, and can range from discussing the anatomy of a cleft lip and palate repair to hands-on sessions on Foley catheter placement. Suture labs take place in March. The week before the first team leaves, affectionately known as "Haiti Week," students have daily evening sessions which can be led by students, residents, or faculty.
