The Emory Global Perioperative Alliance is a student-led, faculty-supervised organization within Emory University School of Medicine whose mission is to provide essential surgical services to improve patient quality of life, to engage in collaborative educational efforts with local healthcare staff, and to assist in local healthcare infrastructure in communities around the world. We have involvement across the Emory School of Medicine and Emory Healthcare system (and even some extra friends from across the United States) and faculty representation from the Departments of Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, and Anesthesiology.
Our organization began in 2008 with a relationship between Emory and the Hospital Bienfaisance de Pignon in the town of Pignon within the Central Plateau of Haiti. Since then, we've established new connections with various faculty, organizations, and communities across the globe, including Bolivia, Peru, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Puerto Rico. Click the countries below to learn more about our mission & goals in each location.
In the last few years, we've battled political & social unrest, natural disasters, and global pandemics. Thus, we were unable to travel to Pignon to carry out our surgical mission for 2019 and 2020. We consulted multiple sources in making the decision to travel, including contacts in Haiti and Bolivia who could assess the local safety status in our potential destinations. While these temporary setbacks are a disappointment to our entire team, our commitment to our efforts in Pignon & beyond will not ebb. We will continue fundraising for future trips, maintain communication with our international partners to see how we can best serve them remotely during this time, and hope to travel again in 2021.
